Education

We bring support to students and teachers through literacy programs, mentorship, and our partnerships with local schools, city officials, and ministries around the world.

Today, only 25% of Oklahoma 4th graders are reading at their grade level. This is much bigger than just kids not being able to enjoy Where the Red Fern Grows. Literacy is the foundation of future learning. It’s the ability to realize your full potential.

Statistics show that if a child doesn’t read proficiently by the third grade they are four times more likely to drop out of school. If they drop out of high school, they have much higher odds of going to prison. In fact, 75% of all Oklahoma inmates did not complete High School or are considered low literate. Parents who are illiterate raise children who are illiterate and so the cycle continues. We want to do something about it.

We think it's time to intensify our support of an organization called Reading Partners. This national program has been committed to Oklahoma since 2013 and is now serving 27 different schools in our state alone.

Their objective is pretty simple. Help kids learn how to read through mentoring. They focus on under-resourced schools and provide students with the reading support they need to read at grade level by the 4th grade. On average, students more than double their rate of learning while in the program.

We believe we can make a real difference in the lives of young people and generations to come by simply helping children learn to read. Your gifts to the Compassion Offering, as well as volunteer efforts, will help carry the mission of God into the classrooms of our community and break the cycle of illiteracy.
